Mohammed is the best at what he does
I took a last minute private tour of Luxor from El Gouna after having an unexpected spare day following a conference. I would recommend everything about this experience except for one thing: I utterly lucked out on going with Mohammed—it would’ve been less of a trip had I gone with another tour guide—so I recommend not going last minute so you can ensure a day with Mohammed.
The drive from El Gouna to Luxor takes a little under 4 hours and passes through the Eastern Desert to Karnak Temple in Luxor. En route, Mohammed walked through the last 7,000 years of Egyptian history in a concise, easy to understand manner. This is his specialty and it shows.
At Karnak, Mohammed’s expertise was on full display. I especially enjoyed the story of Min. Beyond his wonderful stories, he also displayed the true value of an exceptional guide: He knows everyone. This may not matter to an inexperienced traveler, but to the experienced traveler, you understand that those relationships matter. Similarly, Mohammed was adept at directing you to the important features in each of the tombs at the Valley of the Kings as well as at the Temple of Hatshepsut.
Other highlights included a stop at a papyrus store to learn about how ancient Egyptians made papyrus, a boat ride across the Nile for an Egyptian lunch, and a visit with a family making alabaster statues in their ancestral home built on top of an ancient Egyptian nobleman’s tomb. A personal highlight for me was learning the telltale signs between handmade papyrus/alabaster products and machine crafted knock offs.
I unequivocally recommend Mohammed and Your Tour Guides Hurghada. You will not regret this full day trip as the memories will last a lifetime.
