Dandara, the ancient Tantera, called Tentyris by the Greeks, is an extensive site with tombs dating back to the earliest dynasties, it was the capital of Egypt's sixth nome. its most famous monument is the Temple of Hathor, enclosed within a great mud brick wall, Begun under the late Ptolemaic kings ( probably Ptolemy XII ) two building phases under the Romans followed .
At the beginning of the 18th Dynasty, by order of king Thutmosis I , a well-guarded settlement was founded in a small depression of the mountains at Western Thebes, at a place now known as Deir el-Medineh . the craftsmen who worked on the necropolises, the Valley of the Kings, lived here with their families. They were called "servants in the place of truth" .

The Luxor Museum opened its doors in 1976. Situated directly on the banks of the Nile, the exemplary presentation of its exhibits makes it one of the finest museum buildings in Egypt. Two floors of exhibits mainly highlight monuments from the greater theban area . On the ground floor a gallery has been reserved for the more than 20 royal statues found in the "cachette" of the Temple of Luxor.
